PREFACE
The Pierre Beautrais-Jiang wen (Naijing Music Radio) co-produced "Jolly Good Music Hour" (JGMH) commenced January 1995 on Nanjing Music Radio 105.8FM.
The programme aired at 9:00-10:00 Saturday with a repeat at 23:00 next day; with the station reformatting, the repeat played at 23:00 Wednesday.
The programme has the following special features:
A.Bi-lingual presentation
JGMH is presented in both Putonghua and English, enhancing its suitability for a wider international audience. Besides entertaining and informing, linguistic and training assistance is given.
B. Real international co-hosting
Unlike some shows where the hosts are thousands of miles apart; Mr Jiang wen and Pierre Beautrais work side by side. This enables them to model the balance and blending of East and West and to provide a more vivid quality of feedback and communication.
C. Values infusing the whole series
The audience receives a uniform sense of values identified as a unifying theme through a variety of materials.
D. More information and comments
Compared to other music programmes, the JGMH provides more information and points of view; not only music and musicians, but also on literature, science, nature, ecology, geography and history. Listeners are given imaginative sound pictures of our planet to help them to identify with a strong Chinese role for every aspect of living.
These features make the JGMH very distinctive and popular. The JGMH enjoys general popularity with radio stations and audience. At the National Provincial Capital Radio Station Conference held in Guangzhou in September 1994, a sample tape played drew wide attention and won good comments. Representatives of 20 stations showed great interest to broadcast the series on their own channels.
In November 1994, the JGMH won the Premier Award for the Best Programme of the inaugural Guangdong Radio Music Festival; there were 70 entries from 40 countries. The audience feedback about the JGMH is satisfying. In March 1995, the JGMH rated 20.5%, ie the highest of its kind-imported weekly programme. There is an audience therefore of 1,025,000.
The JGMH is a highly successful demonstration of the Best of the West in the very Best of the East.
Music is a profound vehicle for the expression of human culture; the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical elements of integrity. The Chinese people, having stood up in 1949, are now opening up to the rights and responsibilities of a major role in world leadership. Music-Radio offers an opportunity to model a productive and powerful synergy between Eastern and Western past, present and possible. When we understand each other's cultural values we can weave together a much more powerful and realistic sense of a vision. With the best of the East(sun) and the best of the West(moon) in the spirit of Ming (enlightenment), then anything is possible. Growth without communication is cancer. Radio assists us to effectively communicate values which promote global wellbeing. This paper describes the values and vision woven into the presentation of music-radio programmes in the People's Republic of China. Now that we have our foundations, lets build a dream, music radio contributing to a world in harmony.
Today, in the spirit of Ming, I put it to you that with a deep understanding of each other anything is possible; as human beings we can be the most creative species on earth; these times challenge us to be our truly creative best. Music radio gives us a great opportunity to communicate the values and vision of our community. By being aware of each others values we can better add value to each others lives.
In these days of technology where the world is becoming like a global village we have a great opportunity to know and respect each other's cultures and to avoid the mistakes of the past where one culture may have ignored the legitimate aspirations of the other. So let us use our time at this festival to build our relationship, our understanding of each other's hearts desire and our capacity to contribute to friendship, exchange and development.
Our scientists in the West describe one of the major killers in the West, cancer, as growth without communication. We at this festival have chosen communication as our vocation and our destiny, so let us build a vision of what is possible if we do our work well; that is we have a sound vision, we can sense that something in the air-the good idea whose time has come-the spirit of our times to best serve our people and improve the conditions for life on earth.
Whether we are aware of it or not, each of us has a vision, a sense of what is possible and what needs to be done to serve our community and our world. We need to be aware of our vision, our hearts desire, make it known so, that we can be clear about what is decided.
Together the sun and the moon become ming and they light up the world. We in the west have for far too long emphasised the science of our integrity at the expense of the artful; side, Many commentators describe this century in the West as The Agc of Doing Better but Feeling Worse. We look to China and your understanding of the art, the deep rhythms of life, we see your understanding and optimism. We realise it is time to come to you to reinforce our understanding of the art of living.
From my successfull co-operation with Nanjing Music Radio, I learn that culture exchange between the west and the East including radio broadcasting exchange, should base on the following foundation.
A. Equality; In the past, certain westerners visit China with an attitude of superiority, with an attitude of commanding, with an attitude of prejudice. Their idea seemed to be "The better of the West for the worse of the East", But cooperation should be grounded on equality. No equality, no co-operation!
After carrying out serious and careful theoretical research and on-the-spot investigation I have found that China and its culture is a brilliant part of the human civilisation. The valley of prejudice and ignorance disappeared. The banner of the "Best of the East and the Best of the West" raised to guide the way to cooperation, understanding and success.
"The Best of the East and the Best of the West" suggests that each culture should learn from each other, teach, help each other, work together, win together.
B. Respect; cooperators need to know and respect each other. "The Best of the East and The Best of the West" suggests that each culture has its own unique merit. We may not be totally familiar with nor understand a certain culture at a particular time but we must first try to respect it. Because of its accumulation of thousands of years of civilisation, it has "the best" to tell. An unresolvable problem in one culture may find an answer in another someday. We respect each other for each other's "best"; this is not only valuable for one side but for both. One side should respect itself because it has its own best; in the meantime it should respect the other side because it has its best as well. It is self respect and mutual respect. Respect creates good atmosphere for cooperation.
C. Pride; the "Best of the East and the Best of the West" reflects pride, admiration and appreciation toward the elite of the Eastern and Western cultures. We are so proud of it, we believe in it so much and we want to show it to the world and offer it to others, share it with others. We believe that the best blending with the best must be better than the best! It is our mission, our responsibility to contribute our best, your best, to build a new better world. And we have the abilities to reach that goal, because we have the "best" we are simply the "best". Enormous potential can erupt when people are working with a sense of pride, for a sense of pride.
D. Trust; "The Best of the East and the Best of the West" is a contract to determine a relation of mutual depending and relying. Our result should be the mixture consisting of the two. During the whole process to the goal, one side cannot exist without the other, one side cannot progress without the other; the project cannot exist in the absence of either side, some must depend on each other, work together and win together. Non-confidence will obstruct the course, selfishness will damage oneself. It is based on the real trust that Nanjing Music Radio and Project
Ming Programmes develop so efficiently and so smoothly.
Why so say that?
A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP in International Broadcasting. The Nanjing Music Radio-Project Ming partnership is unique. It is neither like the type of Deutsche Welle which supplies "end product" programmes, nor like the type of ABC which provides "semi-final"programmes in English with blanks for possible Chinese-language inserts-but the hosts of the two sides never see each other. Our programmes have face-to-face, on-the-spot international team work. This facilitates creative and positive production where quality control can be continuously monitored. Mr. Pierre Beautrais has good academic and practical background in psychology, management, broadcast, literature and cross-cultural study. These are quite beneficial for his presentation. These qualities are very beneficial in dealing with the professional aspects of performing in China.
On the Chinese side, there is a young, well-educated, enterprising management group with open minds and a long-term view. The Chinese counterpart Jiang Xuewen, majoring in Chinese language and literature, has 9 years of broadcasting career to introduce Western classical and pop music. He has excellent English skills and can effectively interpret negotiations between the local and foreign sides.
B. Quality Facilities; The Nanjing Music Radio-Project Ming co-productions are compiled in NMR's world-standard facilities. Technical quality is at the cutting edge for global standards. We feel that the Chinese audience is particularly discerning, there are many modalities competing for their valuable time. Our production must be of sufficient quality to encourage individuals to invest their time with us.
C. Time, Patience, Enthusiasm; International joint work has a common difficulty-distance. One side has to meet the distant partner and achieve long-distance contact. This requires time, patience and enthusiasm. NMR and Project Ming have contributed massively in all of these areas to start it, to keep it and to develop it.
